The 2016 Latrobe City Sauna Sail was held over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend here at Hazelwood Pondage. This sailing regatta for off the beach and trailable yachts has a long tradition going back nearly 50 years with many families taking part of over three and even four generations of sailors.

This year saw over 130 entries from as far as Albury, Adelaide and Portland yacht clubs. Mixed fleet sailing is always great fun and we had a broad range of competitors; all ages, all abilities and all degrees of competitive focus. This is one of those regattas where world champions (four current and former world champions took part this year) and Olympic representatives sail alongside newcomers to the sport of sailing. The opportunities for learning and mentoring are constant.

Our junior fleet was well supported with 18 entries and the Hansa class (sailing for all abilities) also contributed greatly to the fleet.

We had perfect weather with fair breezes on Saturday, a brisk breeze on Sunday and a challenging gusty wind on Monday morning. This provided good conditions for all classes at some time during the weekend.

The Latrobe Valley Yacht Club wishes to thank all those sailors and their families who supported the event and hope you had a great weekend. We look forward to providing you all with great sailing at the 2016 Sauna Sail.

Results can be found on the website and our Sauna Sail facebook page along with some great photos of the event.
